Week 1 - Homework: User Journey Sketches (Newspaper)

Homework

We were asked to do wireframes, sketches/story boards for different user journey setting. This task made me analyse the page by page details the user has to go through to get the task done. Categories and small clues can lead/mislead the user. It is essential to have this test to see where mistakes can occur and how can the journey be more concise.

Article 1: From Dominion Post, task was to find west Africa's population

• The front page usually gives summaries of stories featured inside the newspaper. For this task, the user did not find any clues that will lead him to the article
• He browsed through the pages and noted he may have not found the correct category.
• The user also quickly checked the headlines to see if there any clues for the task
• Once the user thinks he was at the correct category, he browsed through the headlines & images. 
• He found a clue based on an image and scanned the article for large number.
• User was successful in completing the task.

I also did an additional test at home using a different newspaper (Independent Herald), I have asked my sister to complete a task by finding an article. A few problems occurred like the newspaper did not have a 'category' on top of the page unlike the Dominion Post. It made the task more difficult to get done. I took note to make sure the importance of guides (eg. categories) when starting the web project.

Week 1 - Class 1: Newspaper User Test

Class 1 Task

We were able to examine different articles from the dominion post. We looked for articles that attracts us and what are the components within the article in comparison to its position to the whole newspaper. We were also asked to quickly sketch the article and look for it on stuff.co.nz

Article 1: Anzac Day Remembering at Dawn

• We chose this article because it was current.
• The image stands out with the placed tagline inside.
• There was no particular headline on the page. We observed that "Remembering at Dawn" is used as the headline.
• The category on the page was named "Anzac Day", which meant that this was a featured page for today's newspaper.
• 2 more articles about Anzac Day was also on the same page.
• After searching the article on stuff.co.nz, we noticed how the Headline was different and longer compared to the newspaper, the article on the website were put together more longer than well-grid newspaper.
• Details on newspaper were more condensed.

Below images are notes recorded for another article from the newspaper (Story 3: All Capitals) which was not found on the web and sketches were done to record the process. The next task was to look for a different article that will be present on the web.
